Market-leading firms declined nearly three times faster than the field across 188 U.S. markets as consumers migrate to AI assistants that rarely name them.
ORLANDO, FL, UNITED STATES, August 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — ORLANDO, Fla., August 26, 2026 — The personal injury firms Americans search for most are being searched for less. According to new data from BrandTerritory, the Personal Injury Brand Demand Index, branded search demand for the leading firm in each measured U.S. market fell 16.1% in aggregate from the first to the second quarter of 2026. Fifty-three percent of the 188 measured market leaders declined.
The decline is not evenly distributed. Across all 1,624 firm-market positions the index tracks, total branded demand fell 5.1% quarter over quarter — from roughly 211,000 to 200,000 monthly branded searches. The firms losing ground fastest are the market leaders: the names built by decades of television, billboard, and jingle investment.
“Every billboard, TV spot, and verdict a firm has ever publicized converts into one measurable asset: people typing its name into a search bar,” said Jacob Malherbe, founder of BrandTerritory. “That asset just shrank 16% in ninety days for the biggest brands in this industry — and most of them have no instrument that would have told them.”
The index’s data points to where some of that demand is going. Consumers increasingly ask AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini — which injury lawyer to call, and the firms losing branded searches are largely absent from those answers. In one market covered by the index, the firm leading all branded search demand was named zero times across sixteen consumer-intent questions put to leading AI assistants.
“The demand isn’t disappearing. It’s migrating to a venue where almost no firm is standing,” Malherbe said. “The searches a firm loses on Google don’t come back on their own — but they can be found, measured, and won back. That starts with knowing your number.”
Methodology. BrandTerritory measures branded search demand — searches for individual firm names, principal attorneys, common misspellings, and known brand variants — using Google Ads market-level search-volume data across 188 major U.S. markets and 1,095 personal injury firms, representing approximately 1.2 million monthly injury-related searches. Quarterly comparisons reflect April–June versus January–March 2026 monthly averages. Google reports search volume in rounded bands; all figures are estimates within those bands. The full methodology is published at brandterritory.ai/methodology.
Seeing your market. Every measured market and each leader’s trend direction are published free on the index’s public ledger at brandterritory.ai, and any firm may claim its listing at no cost. The complete figures behind this report — a firm’s exact share and movement in every market, each competitor’s trajectory, twelve-month curves, and alerts when the competitive picture changes — are available to subscribing firms through Brand Defense ($499/month) at brandterritory.ai/pricing. Market leaders are indexed whether or not they subscribe; a commercial relationship cannot change any firm’s score, rank, or public position.
