WCI will supplement Regenstrief’s technical team across LOINC’s development, release, and FHIR® delivery, freeing Regenstrief to focus on the standard itself.
OAKLAND, CA, UNITED STATES, September 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Regenstrief Institute, the developer and steward of LOINC®, today announced a strategic partnership with West Coast Informatics (WCI) to provide technical support across the development and release of LOINC. Under the collaboration, WCI will supplement Regenstrief’s technical team by taking on select aspects of its processes.
The partnership’s first initiative is the delivery of LOINC content, with Regenstrief employing TermHub™ to make LOINC available to the global implementer community through its FHIR-based services. TermHub, WCI’s terminology server platform, is purpose-built for standards development organizations (SDOs). Through TermHub’s SDO Managed FHIR Deployment offering, Regenstrief gains production-ready FHIR terminology services and is freed from the need to build, host, and maintain dedicated distribution infrastructure, allowing downstream implementers to consume LOINC through standard FHIR APIs. Regenstrief’s adoption represents one of the first deployments of TermHub’s SDO offering by a major standards organization, demonstrating the platform’s readiness to support standards distribution at scale. The model and offering supporting this work are described in WCI’s announcement of its managed FHIR offering for SDOs.
LOINC is one of the world’s most widely adopted clinical terminology standards, providing universal identifiers for laboratory tests, clinical measurements, observations, and documents. As demand for machine-readable, FHIR-based terminology accelerates across health systems, vendors, and regulators worldwide, the partnership is designed to make LOINC easier to access, consume, and implement without adding operational burden to Regenstrief’s standards teams.
“LOINC is foundational to global health data interoperability, and powering its distribution via TermHub is a major milestone for our platform,” said Jesse Efron, Chief Operating Officer of West Coast Informatics. “Our mission with TermHub is to make the world’s most complex clinical terminologies easily accessible, authorable, and ready for modern health systems. By taking on the operational and infrastructure complexities of FHIR-based delivery, we’re proud to help Regenstrief scale its reach while freeing their experts to focus on the continued evolution and stewardship of the LOINC standard.”
“LOINC’s value grows when implementers can access and use it easily in modern systems,” said Marjorie Rallins, Executive Director of LOINC and Health Data Standards, Regenstrief Institute. “Partnering with West Coast Informatics and deploying TermHub allows us to meet our community where they are, delivering LOINC through industry-standard FHIR services without compromising the rigor and stewardship our users rely on. This collaboration strengthens our ability to serve a global community that depends on LOINC every day.”
The partnership reflects a broader shift in how critical terminology content is maintained and distributed. For decades, standards organizations have faced a costly, behind-the-scenes challenge: making their content available in standards-compliant, machine-readable formats has required significant engineering investment, ongoing support, and deep FHIR expertise. By pairing Regenstrief’s domain authority over LOINC with WCI’s terminology infrastructure, the collaboration positions LOINC users to take advantage of modern, FHIR-native access immediately. It also frees Regenstrief to direct its expertise toward other LOINC initiatives and priorities.
